To add a formula to your lesson in LessonUp, you'll need to provide it as LaTeX: a standard format for writing mathematical equations. If you're not familiar with LaTeX, don't worry. The tools below let you build equations by clicking symbols, just like a regular equation editor, and then copy the LaTeX code to paste into the formula component.
They are ordered from easiest to most complex.
CodeCogs Equation Editor
Pros
Click-to-insert symbol toolbar, no need to type any LaTeX yourself
Live preview shows exactly how your equation will look
The LaTeX code appears below the editor and can be copied with a single click
Cons
The interface looks a little dated but is straightforward once you get started
Can be slow to load on some connections
Lagrida LaTeX Equation Editor
Pros
Quick and simple to use
The LaTeX code is displayed immediately and easy to copy
No account or login required
Cons
Fewer symbols available than CodeCogs, may not cover more advanced notation
Creating an account lets you save equations, but the free plan limits this to 4 per week (copying is always unlimited)
VisualMathEditor
Pros
Extensive symbol library, good for complex or specialised notation
LaTeX code appears in a text field ready to copy
No account needed
Cons
The interface is cluttered and can take some time to get used to
Better suited to users who are already comfortable with LaTeX
Mathcha
Pros
Modern, easy-to-use interface β works similarly to equation editors you may already know
No account required for basic use
Cons
Designed as a full document editor rather than a single equation tool, which adds extra steps to get to your LaTeX
Copying the LaTeX isn't obvious at first β you need to right-click your equation and select Copy LaTeX
Some features are locked behind a paid account
Vexlio Equation Editor
Pros
Lightweight and fast
No account required
Cons
The symbol toolbar is limited compared to CodeCogs or Lagrida, so more complex notation may need to be typed manually
Not recommended for advanced equations unless you are already familiar with LaTeX syntax
