Creating an open-ended question in the new lesson editor

Updated over a week ago

With the open question in LessonUp, you can easily collect, discuss, and assess students’ answers. The open question has been completely redesigned and now includes additional features that make reviewing answers even easier. In this article, we explain step by step how to create an open question and what options you have during your lesson.

Adding an open question to your lesson

Step 1: Open the new lesson editor

Go to My LessonUp, click New lesson, and choose Blank lesson under the new lesson editor. You can also open an existing lesson in the new editor.

Step 2: Add an open question

Click + Slide and select Open question.
The question will be added to your lesson immediately.
You can also choose the variant where the answer field is aligned to the right.

Step 3: Add your question and adjust the layout

  • Type your question in the text field.

  • Under the question, you’ll see a frame with grey boxes: this is where students’ answers will appear during the lesson.

  • You can customise the colour and transparency of the answer area by clicking on it.

Setting correct answers

You can add one or more correct answers. For example, different versions or synonyms.
Click on the answer field and add the correct answers in the panel on the right-hand side of your screen.

Marking answers as correct during the lesson

While presenting, you can tick an answer to mark it as “correct”.
This answer is automatically added to your list of correct answers.

Automatic recognition of similar answers

If a student’s response matches any of the correct answers, LessonUp will automatically mark it as correct.

Optional settings

Display answers anonymously

You can choose to show student answers anonymously in class.
This setting is available under the options of the open question and is useful for sensitive topics or mentor lessons.

What do students see?

  • Students see a text field on their device where they can enter their answer.

  • After submitting, they can still edit their response via Edit answer.

  • If their answer matches one of the correct answers you entered, it will automatically be recognised as correct.
