Generating a lesson structure using OpenAI in LessonUp

A step-by-step guide to using OpenAI in LessonUp to help generate a full lesson structure.

Updated over a month ago

It is possible to use OpenAI (artificial intelligence) to help generate a lesson structure. It is currently still a beta functionality, meaning it is still in development. Do you have feedback on this functionality? Then contact us via the chat at the bottom right of your screen.

How does the lesson generator work?

  • By writing a prompt for the lesson, you will receive several options for slides to add to your lesson.

  • Use the generator mainly as a source of inspiration. The lessons are not ready-made. The generated slides are added to your lesson without layout. You need to add the layout yourself. In addition, it is important to check the slides for correctness.

  • You can enter a prompt in any language. The language you select under 'Language' is the language in which the slides are generated. For example, you can write a prompt in Dutch and generate the slides in English.

Step 1

In 'My LessonUp' you will now see a new button: 'Generate lesson'. Click this to open the lesson generator.

Step 2

Give input for the lesson generator to generate slides. The better your input, the better the results. Write what the lesson is about, which subject to you teach, what topic you are discussing and what the learning goal is. In this article you can read more information on how to write a good prompt.

Step 3

Choose which optional settings you want to use. Here are some additional explanations for each option:

  • Learning phases: ensures that the generated slides are divided into lesson phases.

  • Teacher notes: provides extra explanation about the slides for you as a teacher. You get suggestions on how to use the slide in class.

  • Activate previous knowledge: this feature creates a mindmap, matching the prompt you entered.

  • Exit ticket: this function creates an exit ticket at the end of your lesson.

Then click 'Generate'.

Step 4

It may take a while for the results to load, please be patient.

Step 5

You will now first get an overview of all the lesson items. Scroll down to deselect the lesson items you don't want to use.

You can see what type of slide it is (cover, slide, mindmap, open question, etc.). After you have created your lesson, you can always add or remove slides.

If you are not satisfied with the generated results, you can change your prompt.

When you are satisfied, click Create lesson.

Step 6

The slides are added to your lesson. Check the slides before using them in your lesson.

Note: This is a beta functionality. This means that it contains most of the major features, but is not yet complete. We are collecting feedback to improve the functionality. Keep in mind that you may encounter things that do not work optimally. We would love to hear how you experience the functionality so we can improve it. Thank you!
