Asking questions during an in-person lesson with LessonUp
Updated over a year ago

The 'ask questions' feature allows students to ask questions through their devices during an in-person lesson with LessonUp, shared on the interactive whiteboard.

With this feature, if you find yourself in a hybrid teaching situation, where some students are at home and others in the classroom, you can ensure that there is interaction between all the students, no matter where they are. All students visualise the question asked by the teacher—this makes LessonUp the perfect hub for hybrid education.

To activate questioning, start your lesson via the 'Teach' button. At the bottom of the screen is a hand with a 'no entry' symbol. This means that questioning is disabled:

By clicking on the hand, you will activate the questioning and students can join in once they have entered the lesson's PIN code. The three questions asked will appear on this screen. Any other questions will not appear until the first three questions are answered.

Notification of a question asked

The moment students ask a question, and the Asked Question screen is closed, the student's name appears briefly at the bottom of the screen and a badge (with number) appears near the hand. The hand changes colour from white to yellow.

If you click on the hand + badge, the question will appear on the interactive whiteboard.

Good to know: the notifications with the name of the students that appears briefly on the screen can be turned off. Even when the notifications are turned off, a badge will always appear next to the yellow hand to indicate that a question has been asked.

Options

Settings (symbol: cogwheel)

Here you can set up the question asking process the way you want it.

Show notifications: the name of the person asking the question appears on the screen for a few seconds when the Asked Question screen is closed.

Hide names: the name of the questioner is hidden.

These options relate to the current session. There are also some options that are permanent. For example, you can have Questioning always on for every lesson you teach. Students can then ask questions immediately after entering the PIN code.

With the option Pinning panel immediately on opening, the Asked Questions screen is open by default on the right side of the screen during an in-person lesson.

Delete questions (icon trash can)

This allows you to delete all the questions that have been asked at once. Individual questions can be deleted by clicking on the cross in the top right-hand corner of the question badge.

Disable questioning (symbol: 'no entry' traffic sign)

You turn off the possibility to ask questions. You can turn it on again by clicking on the little hand at the bottom of the screen.

Freeze (symbol: pin)

This puts all questions to the right side of the screen. We will explain this later on.

During the lesson

Students can ask questions by using the yellow hand, at the bottom right of their LessonUp account. To do this, they have to join the lesson with the PIN code. Each student can only open one question. Students can withdraw and/or change their questions. The question can be up to 140 characters long.

By clicking on the question, it appears centrally on the interactive whiteboard. All students, the ones in the classroom and those working remotely, see the question.

Locking the Asked Question screen

Clicking on the pin symbol locks the Shared Questions screen on the right side of the screen. The questions will then appear on this screen. Unlike the smaller screen, at the bottom of the image, all students' questions will appear here. By default, only the students' names are shown, but it is also possible to show the entire question.

An overview of all the questions that have been asked, as well as your response, are automatically saved in the classroom lesson report.

Applications

With this functionality in LessonUp students can always ask questions during the lesson. This may be particularly useful if students have to work independently and in silence, whether or not using the Traffic Light component. The students can still ask their questions, which can then be answered during or after the independent part.

Another possibility is to use this feature to do an absence check during your online lesson: ask students at any time during your online lesson if they would like to reply.

This feature is also perfect to use as an exit ticket plenary, without having to use the Open Question lesson component.
