Everything about the N-term as a standardization for tests.

Updated over 7 months ago

Recently, LessonUp introduced the option to use the N-term as a standardization factor in tests. In the Netherlands, the N-term, or standardization term, is employed in calculating grades for central final exams. The standardization was developed in 1998 by the predecessor of the College voor Toetsen en Examens (CvTE).

The standardization term ranges between 0.0 and 2.0 and can assume values in tenths between 0 and 2. If a test proves to be too easy, it receives a low N-term (less than 1.0), for example, 0.5 or a minimum of 0.0. Conversely, if a test is deemed difficult, it may receive a high N-term (greater than 1.0).

The CvTE determines the final N-term for tests by calculating the average of all grades obtained in the respective subject, divided by the number of students who participated at that level. If this figure is lower than expected, the N-term is adjusted upward. The opposite applies if the figure is higher than expected. Generally, the N-term for the second session of central final exams is at least the same as that of the first session.

Using the N-term in LessonUp makes it easy to assess the most suitable standardization for the entire class. By entering a new N-term, the grades are automatically adjusted. The N-term can be found by clicking on the white standardization box in the Grades tab.
