Reduce the size of a PowerPoint presentation

Is your PowerPoint presentation too large to upload? Find out how to resolve this here.

Updated over a year ago

Many LessonUp users upload their PowerPoint presentations to LessonUp to include interactive elements. Although the maximum upload size of a PowerPoint presentation in LessonUp is 100MB, sometimes a file might still be too large. In this tip, we explain how you can reduce the size of a PowerPoint presentation to make it suitable for uploading to LessonUp.

Before shrinking the PowerPoint presentation, it's essential to identify what makes the presentation large. Notorious culprits include media such as audio and video. By removing these from your presentation (and adding them to your LessonUp lesson via YouTube), your presentation can significantly reduce in size by dozens of megabytes. Additionally, LessonUp cannot access media within a PowerPoint presentation.

In most cases, you might not even need to use the following step. However, if your PowerPoint presentation is still too large, PowerPoint offers the option to greatly reduce (compress) the presentation size. Here are the steps:

Step 1

Open your presentation in PowerPoint on your computer.

Step 2

Double-click on an image, opening the Format tab at the top of the PowerPoint window.

Step 3

Click on Compress Pictures. This option can be found in the 'Adjust' group of the 'Format' tab.

Step 4

In the pop-up window that appears, at the top, you'll see 'Apply only to this picture'. Uncheck this option. Disabling this option ensures that all images in your presentation will be compressed.

Step 5

Choose the option Web (150 ppi) or Email (96 ppi).

Step 6

Click on Ok. All images in the presentation will now be compressed. The size of your PowerPoint presentation has been reduced, allowing it to be uploaded to LessonUp.

Good to know: Uploading and converting the PowerPoint presentation may take a few minutes. You can monitor the progress in Uploads.
