What does this AI tool do?

The Create Rubric AI tool helps you quickly generate a tailored assessment rubric for any type of task. You decide the kind of rubric, number of performance levels, evaluation scale and education level. Based on your input, the AI creates relevant criteria and descriptions.

This tool is ideal for:

  • providing students with clear expectations,

  • assessing fairly and consistently,

  • offering constructive feedback,

  • and supporting peer or self-assessment.

How does it work?

1. Describe the assignment

Briefly explain what the task involves. For example:
“A group presentation about climate change” or “An argumentative essay on animal testing”.

This helps the AI generate fitting criteria.

2. Choose the rubric type

You can choose from two formats:

  • Analytical
Breaks assessment down into separate elements, such as content, structure, language use, collaboration. Great for detailed feedback.

  • Holistic
Provides one overall score. Useful for quick, broad evaluations.

💡 Tip: Use analytic for formative feedback, and holistic for final grades or peer review.

3. Select the assessment scale

Choose how the performance levels should be described:

  • Numerical (e.g. 1 to 5 points)

  • Descriptive (e.g. “Insufficient”, “Satisfactory”, “Excellent”)

4. Choose the number of performance levels

Select between 3 and 7 levels, depending on how detailed you want your assessment to be. More levels give more nuance.

5. Choose how to define your assessment criteria

You have two options:

  • Let the AI generate criteria automatically
Based on your assignment description, the AI suggests suitable criteria (e.g. Content, Structure, Creativity, Use of Sources) tailored to the rubric type and education level.

  • Enter your own criteria manually
If you already have specific assessment aspects in mind, you can input them yourself. This gives you full control over what is assessed.

✏️ Whether you start from scratch or use the AI’s suggestions, you can always edit the rubric later to fine-tune it to your needs.

6. (Optional) Select the educational level

The AI will adapt the language and tone to match your chosen level – from primary to vocational or higher education.

7. Click “Create Rubric”

The AI instantly generates a ready-to-use rubric. You can download it, copy it into your lesson, or adjust it to your needs.

Example

You input:

  • Assignment: Write an opinion piece on social media use among teenagers

  • Rubric type: Analytic

  • Scale: Descriptive

  • Levels: 4

  • Level: GCSE (Key Stage 4)

The AI generates a rubric with criteria such as Argumentation, Structure, Language Use, and Personal Voice, each with 4 levels ranging from “Needs improvement” to “Excellent”.

When to use this AI tool

Ideal for:

  • Written, spoken or creative assignments

  • Consistent grading across classes

  • Making expectations visible for learners

  • Supporting peer or self-assessment
